Description
An original rare & early version of the Madame Butterfly cigar tin. This is the rarely found version with one line name & red background behind the "Madame Butterfly" lettering on the front. Also, this version has an irregular edge around the front scene & does not have the frame line around the front scene. (Whereas: The much more common version has the "Madame Butterfly" on two lines with a yellow background & a frame line around the scene on the front.) The tin has radically intense colors in the design. This tin was issued by the "Progressive Cigar Corporation of Philadelphia" & has their wording on the side. The tin measures 5 3/4 inches tall & has a diameter at the top of 5 5/8 inches. On the inside bottom of the tin the original movable paper is still present. There are two pushed in spots on the rim of the lid. There are a couple of pushed in spots just up from the bottom back rim. Otherwise, this beautiful tin shows only a few tiny scratches, minute flaws, & minor signs of use.
This is a superb example of this rare tin which is probably in the running for finest known example condition-wise of this early version. The example we are offering is superior in condition to an example which was sold at public auction over nine years ago for a price well in excess of our buy it now price.
All of the colors on the tin are of optimum intensity & brightness. The tin has never been cleaned or polished or tampered with in any way. All of the surfaces are entirely original in all respects.
